    Description: This three day Kayak Camp is designed for the young beginner paddler. The camp begins with an introduction to kayaking on a pond. Campers paddle these craft solo and develop skills that emphasize independence and self-reliance. Campers learn skills through a mix of instruction, demonstrations, games, and trips. The instructors demonstrate and discuss paddle strokes and techniques, rescue skills, and boating safety. The opportunity to explore local waterways from ponds to rivers makes this an exciting camp your child will not want to miss. All materials provided.

    Description: Theme: Pond

    The purpose of “Nature School” is to introduce the wonders of the natural world to young children. Crafts, activities, games, books, songs, live animals, and outside exploration will be incorporated into their nature-based learning experience.
    Parents are encouraged to attend with their 4 to 7 year old - though not required. Parents or guardians are asked to attend with their 3 year old to help with bathroom use and transitioning into a group learning environment.

    Classes meet at the BOP Lab located at 5678 143rd Ave

  • Nature Sprouts Playgroup

    Description: Little Hawks Discovery Preschool is hosting “Nature Sprout” playgroups!

    Our goal is to help parents and children “sprout and grow” while enjoying nature!

    The playgroups are open to all children from birth to six years old. These unstructured playgroups immersed in nature will provide children with the opportunity to develop social skills, build upon language skills, and develop their sense of wonder! Parents will have the opportunity to be partners in play with their child(ren), learn from other parents, and share ideas with one another (parent (s)’ attendance is required).

    Please come anytime between 9am-11 am. You may stay as long or as little as you desire!

    Bring drinks and a snack (if you desire) and enthusiasm to play and connect with others.

    Meet at the Discovery Pavilion by the ODC Nature Preserve's main trail head. Registration is preferred by contacting the office at 616.393.9453 or

    Description: These fun, family-friendly canoe and kayak paddles will have the group finding local wildlife, floodplain plant species, and learning about what makes our watershed unique. You will also learn about our Macatawa River Greenway project and what efforts are being taken to protect the Macatawa River and Watershed. The group will meet at the River Avenue entrance of Window-on-the-Waterfront Park. Alternate launch locations may include Windmill Island, Paw Paw Park or Adam’s Street Landing.

  • Macatawa Water Festival

    Description: Please join Project Clarity and over 30 community partners for the Macatawa Water Festival on Saturday, July 25, 11:30 am to 5 pm, in Windmill Island Gardens. Children of all ages will learn about our most precious natural resource, Lake Macatawa and the Macatawa Watershed. The public will be welcomed free of charge to enjoy a day of interactive educational experiences, water and land activities, and fun-filled family time; experiences designed to engage young and old to learn about restoring and preserving our
    lake and watershed.

    In Windmill Island’s Pavilion, guests can purchase a buffet lunch offering products from local Michigan farmers. Students of all ages will receive a Macatawa Watershed Explorer Handbook to continue their journey on the island learning about our lake and watershed.
    Three Educational Areas, Cultural History of our Watershed, The Living Watershed, and Restoring our Watershed, will feature activities where guests can experiment, engage, and learn how to care about our lake and watershed.

    Land and Water Activities will be available for guests of all ages. Children can fish for trout in ponds, have their catch filleted and take it home for dinner. Guides will take guests kayaking around the island, pointing out the natural assets of our watershed while others try their skill on paddle boards and old-fashioned bikes.

    Workshops will feature topics on water and bike safety, building a campfire, backpacking, water testing, building a dug-out canoe, making a rain barrel, and identifying plants in our watershed. And our Watershed Explorer Ambassadors will help young explorers with activities and crafts to help them learn about what a watershed does, what’s happening in our watershed and how they can make a difference to the water quality in Lake Macatawa and the Macatawa Watershed.
