    Description: Explore the nature preserve with a naturalist in search of two bird species few people see: American Woodcock and Wilson’s Snipe. Dress in dark clothing and be prepared to be outside the entire time. Flashlights are welcome. Meet at Founders Hall for a brief introduction before going outside.

    Registration is required.

    Description: During this open house program, you will learn more about various birds of prey including what they like to eat. Bring along your own picnic lunch to eat while the birds have theirs! This will be a great chance to see the Center's birds up-close and personal.

  • Owl Pellet Dissection

    Description: Have you ever wondered what an owl eats? Find out first hand as you become a real forensic scientist and extract bones from an owl pellet to discover the prey consumed. Examine all sorts of bones up close and try to reassemble a skeleton!

    Description: Join a naturalist in search of amphibians, insects and other aquatic life that live on ODC Nature Preserve. All collection tubs and dip nets will be provided. Old shoes or boots that can go into the water are recommended. No sandals or bare feet please. Children under 8 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

    Registration is required.

    Description: Explore the wetlands and Pine Creek at Stu Visser Trails with a naturalist in search of insects, fish, crayfish and crustaceans! Expect to walk into the water with shoes or boots. No bare feet or open-toed sandals. Meet at the parking lot off Ottawa Beach Road. All materials will be provided.

    Children 10 years old and under must be accompanied by a participating adult

    Description: Theme: Spring into the Season

    The purpose of “Nature School” is to introduce the wonders of the natural world to young children. Crafts, activities, games, books, songs, live animals, and outside exploration will be incorporated into their nature-based learning experience.
    Parents are encouraged to attend with their 4 to 7 year old - though not required. Parents or guardians are asked to attend with their 3 year old to help with bathroom use and transitioning into a group learning environment.

    Classes meet at the BOP Lab located at 5678 143rd Ave
    Registration is required:
    Space is limited.
    Fee: $10 per child or

  • Night Hike

    Description: Hike the wooded trails and boardwalks of Laketown Township's Farview Nature Park in search of nocturnal wildlife. Listen for spring peeper frogs and American toads and look for screech owls and American woodcock! Flashlights are welcome.

  • Hunter Education Field Day

    Description: The ODCMG is offering a field day for participants who have completed the online hunter safety course. Upon passing the online course, participants are eligible to complete the field day and take the written examination without attending a classroom course. The fees associated with the online course are not covered by the field day portion of the training.

    Online course options can be found on the Michigan DNR website (www.michigan.gov/dnr). You must bring your online course certificate in order to participate in the field day. Please bring a sack lunch as there will not be adequate time to leave the site for lunch.
