The Holiday season is upon us and so are “Holidays at the ODC!” There will be family-friendly programs throughout the month as we celebrate the season. Look for scavenger hunts, crafts, story time and more.

Weekly Scavenger Hunts

Explore different aspects of the ODC Nature Preserve and Visitor Center in these fun, family friendly scavenger hunts. Stop by the Visitor Center during business hours to pick up your free scavenger hunt. Clipboards and pencils are available for loan.

Tales and Tails

Learn about animals using a children’s book and then see a related animal up close and personal. The program is ideal for little ones who can sit through a short story. The entire program will take place inside the Visitors Center.

Greenery Workshop

December 3, 1-3 pm

Make your own wall decoration or table arrangement and leave the mess behind. We’ll provide fresh greens and other natural materials; bring your own gardening gloves, ribbons, or accessories, if you wish to use them. Meet at the Discovery Pavilion by the main parking lot. Supplies will be collected based upon the expected group and are available on a first come, first serve basis.

Registration is required and limited

Fee: $10 per person, $5 for members

Nature Ornaments

December 4, 1-3 pm

December 18, 1-3 pm

Make an ornament with some things collected from nature. Materials such as seeds, sticks, and leaves will be used to make a unique Christmas ornament. You can hang it up inside on our tree or take it home to hang up inside or outside at your house! All materials will be provided.

Winter Craft Hour

Hungry, Hungry Serpents!

What do snakes eat? Since they are carnivores, their diet consists of things like toads, worms, and mice. Visit Founders Hall to see these awesome predators in action.

Let’s Go Take a Hike

Explore the trails of the ODC Nature Preserve with a naturalist. Who knows what you will find? Birds, mammals, trees and seeds are sure to provide opportunities for things to find.

Feed the Birds

December 29, 1-2 pm

This is a program for all ages that will help you learn how you can attract birds to your yard using feeders and plants. There will be a simple feeder assembled during the program that is ideal for offering sunflower seeds to your feathered backyard visitors.

Owl Pellet Dissection

December 30, 10 am

Have you ever wondered what an owl eats? Find out first hand as you become a real forensic scientist and extract bones from an owl pellet to discover the prey consumed. Examine all sorts of bones up close and try to reassemble a skeleton!

Live Birds of Prey: A Bird’s Eye View

December 30, 2 pm

What makes a bird of prey different from other birds? Using our collection of live birds, you will learn the life history of several species including hawks, owls and falcons. There will be a chance to get an up-close look at the birds and explore artifacts including skulls, wings, talons and feathers.
