For Us

Without generous support from people like you, we could not continue to positively impact our community.

Below you’ll find 5 unique opportunities where you can make a difference at the ODC.

Shade Structure

at De Witt Birds of Prey Center

22,000 people participate in birds of prey programs, annually

Twenty years ago, the Outdoor Discovery Center began a program and attraction that has become one of the largest captive bird of prey collections in Michigan. Oftentimes during a bird of prey program, the glare and heat from the sun become excessive for the birds and presenters.  To alleviate this issue, we need to build a shade structure over the existing amphitheater that will provide our guests with a more comfortable experience.

New Greenhouse

to grow native species for restorations

50,000+ native plants have been grown for restorations

In 2015, ODC acquired its first greenhouse. The Conservation Services team grows native plants and plugs for restorations throughout West Michigan. They also grow Galerucella beetles which are used as bio-control on the highly invasive plant, Purple Loosestrife. We need to invest in a new greenhouse that is larger and better insulated to continue to meet demand.

Scholarships

Invest in a future preschool student

$38,000+ was committed to families for the 2023-24 school year

Furthering outdoor education starts with making it more accessible to everyone. Over 35% of ODC preschool students are on a full or partial scholarship. This program allows families that are in need to apply for tuition assistance.

Second trailer to meet Playscape Demand

Built more than 25 playscapes in the community

In the past 7 years, we have seen an increased demand for nature playscapes. Our team has built more than 25 playscapes throughout the West Michigan community and continues to receive inquiries regularly. To keep up with this demand, we added a second installation crew and now need to add another tool trailer and set of tools.

Gear Library

Help provide gear for students who do not have appropriate outdoor attire

There's no such thing as bad weather, only inadequate attire

If you’ve been a part of any ODC program, you know we firmly believe this saying. Wearing the wrong clothing can ruin an experience for anyone. To avoid this, we need to add to our gear library. We lend gear, such as oakisuits, coats, hats, gloves, boots, etc., to student of all ages who participate in programs.
