De Witt Birds of Prey Center Expansion!
In 2002 ODC began its live birds of prey education programs after acquiring two birds. Today, the Center has 26 live raptors including hawks, owls, falcons, eagles, and vultures.
ODC must expand the facility and renovate the amphitheater to better support our education program, improve the quality of life for some of our birds, and improve overall visitor experience. Through this expansion, ODC will
- Construct a 120′ flight chamber to provide our 6 flighted birds iwth a space to safely fly and exercise, improving their quality of life.
- Construct a courtyard for visitors and families to gather, rest, and enjoy a picnic while visiting separate from programs taking place.
- Redesign and move the amphitheater to improve the program experience for field trips and community programs.
Project Outcomes
120' flight chamber allows 6 fully flighted birds to thrive
Flight Chamber Construction
Of the 26 birds in ODC’s care, 6 are fully flighted. These raptors are among our most impactful wildlife ambassadors – demonstrating the power and grace of flight to program participants. A new flight chamber will give them space to fly on a rotating basis, supporting their health with vital exercise and enrichment.
Visitor Experience Enhancement
More than 100,000 people visit the Outdoor Discovery Center each year. The De Witt Birds of Prey Center is the most heavily visited and most popular feature onsite. Beyond general visitation, more than 105,000 adults and children participate in programs that have one or more of our live raptors in them.
A new courtyard will offer families and groups a place to rest, enjoy a picnic, or simply enjoy nature – separate from the amphitheater, allowing programs and public visits to take place simultaneously.
A place for families and organized programs
26 Raptors serve as Ambassadors for their Species
Raptor Enrichment
All of the birds will live at the Center for the rest of their lives. ODC does not rehabilitate birds, but acquires birds that have gone through a rehab program and cannot be released to the wild. Many have physical ailments including eye, foot, and wing injuries that prevent them from hunting; others are imprinted and unable to survive on their own.
These raptors serve as ambassadors for their species. They allow us to offer a variety of educational programs to the public. From community events to school visits, wildlife booths and more, these raptors see and educate thousands of people each year.
Help us raise $150,000 to support our expansion!
Thanks to the support of people like you, ODC has raised more than half of the funds for this project. With YOUR investment, we can reach our $150,000 and begin construction of the new flight chamber and improve the facility in Spring 2026.
To recognize your generosity, gifts of
$2,500+ will be listed on appropriate signage
